Twenty-sixth drawing (Salamander section comic project) theme => "Strangling".

The "Red Varente" is a fungus that parasitizes and devours the gill membrane of Salamanders, and is a symptom of polluted or stagnant water filtered through the gills.
The "Red Varente" is highly contagious, and can be detected after a one-day contamination by the emergence of black veins that spread from the gills into the respiratory tract and the outside of the skull.
A hacking cough will gradually suffocate the Salamander in two or three weeks, then kill it by asphyxiation. With no known cure, infected Salamanders are condemned to isolation, exile or execution to avoid endangering the population.
